“Life is utterly too short to be stuck in a single era, especially when ADV delivers it this well. Great voice, solid songwriting and appearing on our timelines as the best surprise. More please.” – Texx and the City

There are artists who are easy to pin down – stalwart musos who make tunes that can be defined according to one or two established genres. Then there’s ADV

If you like your music clearly labelled and simple to explain, this talented multi-instrumentalist and inspired solo rocker is sure to drive you up the wall with his intuitive, almost impressionistic approach to creating songs ‘as the soundtracks to memories’.

ADV originally made his debut on the SA music scene in 2013 as the frontman for local hard rock act ‘Haiven’. Over the course of the past six years, he also played drums for ‘Bob & The Banned’, jammed guitar here and there and became a certified sound engineer before deciding to go solo so he could grow into his own sound.

These days the singer, drummer, guitarist, and bassist leans into the things and sounds that inspire him on a daily basis to create soundscapes that invite you to leave the map behind, get a little lost and take the road less travelled. Think grungy, dragging vocals with big riffs blaring over daring drum beats that are driven by precision and groovy baselines.

“I was exposed to all sorts of music from a young age – Elvis, The Doors, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, you name it. Even when I was still a child, I knew that music is what got my heart racing and what I would want to do with my life. Growing up in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, I was fortunate enough to know a few good musicians and I joined my first band at the age of 12. From there it spiralled pretty quickly, and I was swooped up into the music industry,” explains ADV.

The relentless pace of gigs and rehearsals on top of other life responsibilities got to the young artist after a while and he started to feel out of place. This is when he realised it was time to take a step back, swallow his pride and start from scratch. When he picked up the guitar again after a good long while, it was time to write and record his own songs.

“Writing the music for Enigmatic was like revisiting memories by providing soundtracks for them. My music is very personal, but I like to think it’s also universally relatable. I believe the best music comes from a low place when you’re struggling and hungry to make a name for yourself. My life may not have been the most convenient, but it fuels my creativity and I am glad I walked the road that brought me here.”
