Beat the lockdown blues with a foot-thumping dose of Meizana’s liberating new single, “Break Free”
Through their latest single, Break Free, Meizana articulates the experience
of music burning so deeply inside you and fighting to express it amidst the constraints faced by many an artist. They use an effective fusion of both isiZulu and English to take the listener on their journey of desire for liberation while enticing them to dance all the way through it.
Drawing from pop, house and their modern stamp on Maskandi guitar melodies, the sound of the single sparks images of big crowds dancing and singing along to this anthem. Catchy, call-and-answer devices, hook-like brass lines, and a quintessential foundation of a modern South African House further pull the listener in with no option but move.
As in their other music, Meizana speaks the minds of many and invites you to break free from the repetitive chains of life when you press play.
BREAK FREE WILL BE OUT ON ALL DIGITAL PLATFORMS ON 1 MAY 2020

Meizana Bio:
Meizana is a Johannesburg-based music duo comprised of two female vocalists with a refreshing, South African Pop sound. Their name is a combination of the Afrikaans word “meisie” and the Zulu word “intombazana” ultimately creating, Meizana. The meisie and ntombazana involved are Bianca Wood and Phathiswa.
After previously taking on the music industry as solo artists, each having performed with music heavy weights the likes of SA diva, Gloria Bosman and South Africa’s pop-rock stars, The Parlotones, the two songstresses decided join forces. Both members originate from small towns in Gauteng: Bianca hails from Hammanskraal in the north and Phathiswa, from the eastern town of Springs. In 2019 both their lead them from Cape Town, to Johannesburg and most importantly, to each other. Meizana was born. Their music infuses elements from genres like soul, pop, South African house and sprinkles of hip-hop to stir up their fresh sound.
Also in 2019, Meizana released their debut single, “Another You”. It was play-listed on East Coast Radio, featured as a Jacaranda FM Hot-Hit and chosen for notary blog, Bsharp Entertainment’s Friday Playlist. They followed up this success with 2 more singles, namely “She” and “Los!” Later in the year, they demonstrated not only their musical talents but their love of intellectual discourse as well when they were chosen to present their musical talk on the “Harmony of Difference” at TEDxPretoria. Closing the year off in style, Meizana made their Smoking Dragon Festival debut on the main stage.
2020 had started off on an equally promising foot with Meizana landing a spot at the Right 2 Unite Festival for Human Rights Day. Unfortunately, this was postponed due to the Coronavirus Crisis. Nevertheless, Meizana’s positive spirits were not dampened as they are currently working on their first album and they plan to help lift the spirits of many others, by releasing first single for 2020, aptly titled, “Break Free”.
