Between the Berg and the Breede River, straight outta Boland – that’s where rapper Middelvinger (real name Jéan Labuschagne) was born.

Having been a background player in the SA music industry for almost two decades, Middelvinger crafted the reputation as somewhat of a mythical figure, providing lyrical inspiration to more than a few artists – Fokofpolisiekar’s “Bel Vir Middelvinger” is a nod to the rapper’s early days of dealing weed in and around the CBD.

Today Middelvinger’s swapped rolling zols for lyrical jols, and as a result has gone from Dealer to Healer with the first single “Weskus Boi” featuring heavyweights Jack Parow, Fred, Vegas and Drox, off his debut album Boland Bad Boys Vol. 1.

With one of the catchiest choruses you’ll hear anywhere this winter, “Weskus Boi” will have you dreaming of lazy summer days by the seaside, and was born out of Fred Den Hartog’s (Die Heuwels Fantasties) Cape Town studio, The Nothing Club.

“This is feel-good music with some crazy rhymes. It’s a blend of that old school ‘90s early 2000s-style production with a modern college hip hop feel to it. It sounds like the beat up system in the Conquest we used to drive around Stellies and sell weed in,” Middelvinger explains when questioned about the song’s rhythmic narrative.

“Weskus Boi” is without a doubt one of the most eclectic releases of the year, and is backed by a stellar supporting cast that lays a solid foundation for Middelvinger’s debut single and promising future.
