Tkay Maidza is back to wow fans and critics alike with her sonic versatility. Following the whiplash-inducing spitfire summer anthem ‘Shook’, that earned praise everywhere from NPR to Pitchfork to The FADER, she has taken a left-hand turn with the laid-back groove of ‘Don’t Call Again (ft. Kari Faux)’. The boy bye manifesto places Tkay’s smooth singing vocals centre stage with a sharp, straight-shooting verse from much buzzed-about rapper Kari Faux.

Speaking of her new track, Tkay says “‘Don’t Call Again’ is the conversation I wish I could have had in my relationships over the past few years (both romantic and non-romantic). Standing up for yourself can be tough when you’re so close to something. When we completed the track, I always felt Kari would be perfect for it because she keeps it so real when she’s talking relationships. Glad we got to do a track together mid pandemic.”

The accompanying video was conceptualised, self-filmed and co-directed by Tkay with animations by design studio Babekühl (Justin Bieber, TOKiMONSTA, The Free Nationals). “It would have been cool to shoot the video with Kari but Covid has me stuck in Australia and her in Arkansas. So we invested in green screens and self-shot a 70s inspired video in our bedrooms.”

Tkay also announces the release of her new assertive 8-song EP Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2 coming August 7th on 4AD. The release follows 2018’s Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 1, which established her as one of the most exciting voices in the new guard of hip-hop. Vol. 2 will include 2019’s trap-infused, ARIA-nominated single ‘Awake’ featuring JPEGMAFIA, which earned a best of the decade nod from The Needle Drop, as well as praise from Pitchfork, The FADER, Dazed, Complex, and others.

Emerging from Adelaide at just 17 years-old, fans and critics alike were wowed by Tkay’s sonic versatility: her early work earned a 2018 MTV EMA win, a 2016 BET Awards nomination, sets at Governors Ball, Splendour In The Grass, Reading & Leeds, Pukkelpop & Hangout Festival, and tours with the likes of Mark Ronson, Charli XCX, Rita Ora, RL Grime, Years and Years, and Troye Sivan.

Aside from conquering the music sphere, Tkay has firmly placed herself in the fashion world, from starting her own clothing label Last Year Was Weird to partnering with fashion titans Stella McCartney and Tommy Hilfiger. She has also collaborated with some of the world’s most iconic brands from Coca-Cola to fronting a national Nike campaign to Mumm Champagne alongside the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt.

PRESS PRAISE FOR RECENT SPITFIRE SINGLE “SHOOK”:

“As ferocious as she is refined… Tkay gets more gully with every verse as her rhymes glide
over spiralling, disjointed production before diverging into a swampy NOLA bounce breakdown.”
 NPR Music

“This song is art. Pop it on headphones for one of your daily walks; it’s as close as you’re going to get to the sweaty, ear-drum bursting, shouting-your-drinks-order dancefloor experience that we’re all craving right now.” The Guardian (Track of the Week)

“Rising Adelaide spitfire Tkay Maidza is shifting her gears. Get with it now,
or have fun over there in the dust.”
 The FADER

“A kinetic hip-hop dart that will make you long for a club – any club! – to reopen.
One of her strongest singles to date.”
 Billboard

“Thumping, propulsive club-rap that might give you Missy Elliott or Azealia Banks flashbacks.” Stereogum

“Rap’s freshest new act.” Nylon

“It’s a banger – lot of Missy Elliott vibes on this one, do not miss it.” The Needle Drop

“We can’t wait for huge things, and ‘Shook’ is a great start.”
 London In Stereo
