Cranberry Merchants –“Brand New Day” review

I must admit I am a bit biased when it comes to The Cranberry Merchants as I am already a huge fan of whatever they release, but I can honestly say their latest single “Brand New Day” is probably the best they have ever released to date; and that is a bold statement as they have released some great stuff in the past.

The song starts off with some great wah-wah guitar sound by Steve Moore. When I asked about this and questioned the band about the instrument I was told: ”Steve is using an old 90’s-era FX pedal called the Zoom 505, and the effect itself is a type of arpeggiator that scrambles the chord notes into that robotic type of sound when you let it ring out like that.”  That seems to ring in most of the track giving that real rock feel but I am also told Dianne Moore is using a Yamaha keyboard which has a distortion guitar voice using a wheel knob that manipulates the sustain and modulation, in the same way a tremolo bar on a guitar can add that extra little “scream” to a note.  All making up such a great sound for the song.

If you know anything about this band, the band is made up of Dianne And Steve Moore, and in the past they have either dueted on certain tracks such as “Disturbing The Peace”; or with some songs they tend to each take on a song and sing the track with either Steve or Dianne singing on each. For example, classic Cranberry Merchants tracks ‘In the blood” is sung by Dianne and a song like “Black Maria” is sung by Steve.

Their latest track “Brand New Day” is sung by Dianne Moore and I feel that was a good choice to go with because, take nothing away from Steve who is great at vocals, I just feel Dianne’s voice fits perfectly with this track and the rock melody that it is.

Looking at the lyrics of the song (Of which the full lyrics can be found at the bottom of this review), the first verse of the song goes as follows:

“Let’s go…Now is the time

Time to go live

Unravel the threads

I’m hangin’ by

Jumpin’ through hoops

Jackin’ around

Catch 22’s

Bringing me down”

This seems to start off with a great positive message and a song that could easily get stuck in your head and get you to sing along to; or if you are just about to go on stage and perform, you could probably sing these lyrics to gear you up. I don’t really like to break down lyrics because each listener should draw from their own feelings of what the song is about or what it does for them but that is how I feel when I listen to this track.

I would like to congratulate The Cranberry Merchants on this great new track and wish them great success with it as I am sure it is going to do well on a lot of radio stations around the world.

Lyrics to Brand new day

“Let’s go…

Now is the time

Time to go live

Unravel the threads

I’m hangin’ by

Jumpin’ through hoops

Jackin’ around

Catch 22’s

Bringing me down

I’m breaking free

And it’s a brand new day

Breaking free

And it’s a brand new day

Oh yeah…

Dig in my heels

Ditchin’ the past

Shining my light

Trip it fantastic

Nobody else

Will do it for me

Seizing the day

And my destiny

I’m breaking free

And it’s a brand new day

It’s all on me

And it’s a brand new day

Alight…

Now is the time

The wire is live

Striking a chord

Turn up the mic

Write my own lines

Drop my own beat

Rise like the sun

Doing what’s right…

For me…

And it’s a brand new day

Just wait and see

Another brand new day”
