Single Review: Fourth Son South – The Cold
Reviewed by Duzzy Clayton
After the success of the band’s last EP called ‘Machine’, Fourth Son South have been hard at work recording and making new music. The result is a new single of one of the best songs I have heard this year; and trust me that is saying something; because I have heard a lot of new music this year!
New Single ‘The Cold’ is all set to be released on 7 October to online streaming platforms all around the world. Doing the job I do, I was in the lucky position to have been sent the track before its release date and so I was able to do an early review on the song. This also meant that I was one of the first radio presenters who could play ‘The Cold’ on my radio show ‘Rock Steady 94’ before its release date. Being one of the first to hear this track, it has made me anxious that the rest of the world finally get to hear ‘The Cold’ and I can’t wait for release day.
‘The Cold’ will also be the first released single from the band that features new co-vocalist Sarah Gardiner on the track. Sarah recently joined the band and I feel she is settling in well as the new co-vocalist for the band. Recently, I actually got to see the band perform live at ‘Hells Kitchen’ a few days ago and I must say: not only does she take this song to a whole new level but also watching her perform live with the band just felt right. It was as if she was always meant to be part of this band and I, for one, am glad she did join the band. If you thought ‘Fourth Son South’ was exciting before, now with her joining the group, multiply that excitement by a further 100; and that is where we stand with this awesome band.
When asked what ‘The Cold’ means and how the song came about, Peter Toussaint shares that “I wrote ‘The Cold’ on the 21st of June, literally the darkest day in the Southern Hemisphere, yearning for the return of the light and warmer days. This also applies to a relationship that is at its lowest point. As always, there is hope, because the light will come again!”
I think this is a beautiful and inspiring meaning behind the song; and trust me, upon first listen of the song; I was blown away by it. There is something about this song, especially when you reach the chorus, that is so catchy yet beautiful that allows the listener to get caught up into this feeling of happiness and hope, which is what I feel when I listen to this track.
Everything about ‘The Cold’ is awesome: from the music to the lyrics; and of course the shared vocals between Sarah and Peter, enhancing this song that much more. One important thing I should mention about the band is that Peter and Sarah are not the only members who can sing in the band: in the Rhythm section of the band, drummer Carel Viljoen and bassist Bernhard Viljoen are also good vocalists and this just adds so much more to the value of this already unique band.
‘The Cold’ is a great song to add to your playlist for any occasion; but in my opinion can be best listened to when you need upliftment or need to hear lyrics of hope that speak of after stormy weather that people go through, the sun will shine again.
I would like to congratulate the band on an awesome new song and I think this song is going to do very well internationally. I look forward to a promising future for ‘Fourth Son South’.
‘Fourth Son South’ will officially be launching ‘The Cold’ at Jarr Bar in Pretoria on 7 October and you are all invited. It promises to be a great show and a huge party.

Now that we’ve reached
Our darkest day
And things couldn’t get
Worse anyway
It will get better
It will get better
It will get better
Some day
The light will come again
The light will come again
The light will come again
The light will come again
There’s a hand
It’s on my shoulder
Just when I want to grab it
I see it’s mine
The world is so cold
The world is so cold
The world is so cold
Today
The light will come again
The light will come again
The light will come again
The light will come again
The sun will rise
But I stay inside
And maybe when all is gone
I don’t have to hide
The light will come again
The light will come again
The light will come again
The light will come again
My skin is frozen
There was so much
Of all that we wanted
Who is to judge
Let the sun shine
Let the sun shine
Let the sun shine
Let it touch
