Cantrel- My Time has come

Reviewed by Duzzy Clayton

Cantrel is a band I am fast becoming a huge fan of, the bands last single, Without Love, did very well on online platforms around the world and it defiantly got imprinted in my brain and I often find myself singing that track as it suddenly comes into my mind.

So I was very excited to see Cantrel have now released a new track call. My time has come.

Cantrel is made of father and son duo Neil Breytenbach and son Jesse Cantrel, and I am so excited with what this band is producing at the moment.

Upon first listening to the track, I like that the song starts off with some cool piano keyboards sounds which kind of reminds me of a Prime Circle song which makes sense because Neil himself is a member of the award-winning band Prime Circle, so I think to myself he has kind of brought that influence into Cantrel, so if you are a fan of Prime Circle, you might just like this track, then all of a sudden the single takes a whole new meaning and path with some awesome rap and hip hop beats and vocals. When I spoke to Neil in an interview for my podcast (Click Here), Neil said that he likes to mix rap and hip pop with other genres, such as grunge and rock, or, in this instance, with some pop and I can hear both genres coming through strong on this track.

Although Cantrel is a two-piece band between Neil and Jesse, ‘My Time has come’ is a song that boasts some awesome collaboration from Velosity and Jacqueline Tolken, which is something I wasn’t expecting when I first heard the track, but was pleasantly surprised, especially when the song hits the chorus and you hear the beautiful vocals of Jacqueline Tolken, which again makes the song takes a new meaning and direction, which breathes a breath of fresh air into the already great track I can picture myself listening to this track while driving in a car down a highway or stuck in traffic.

Neil shares that “This song is about finding your new path in life in a positive way and not letting your past define your future. It doesn’t matter what people say about you, as every day you wake up is a new day to make a fresh start in life, so don’t let their negative words and ways to get you down. You can make a positive start to your life. Stay Positive and keep Keep Your Head Up!”

So the song obviously has a cool, positive message behind the lyrics and that is the feeling I get when I listened to it, I feel inspired and positive, kind of like I can take on the world.

I would like to congratulate Neil, Jesse and everyone else who worked on this track, it is truly a great track and I look forward to see what else comes out of the Cantrel Camp because if this new single is anything to go by, the future looks good for South African music.

‘My Time Has Come’ is available as a 2-track EP with a Radio Version and Acoustic Version.

Lyrics ‘My Time Has Come’ from Cantrel

Hard times had me stuck up in a bubble

My mind it always got me into trouble

My eyes all they ever saw was struggle

This time I think i figured out the problem

All this madness driving me crazy

So I pray the Lord to come save me

Clouded vision on a mission

And I’m searching for a better way

And a brighter day for my babies sake

This is my time this is my life

I’m gonna find a better way

I cant stand the rain cos I’m drowning in the pain

It got me kicking and shoving

To try to get them out the way

And even when they wanna help me

It’ll never be the same

Knowing that its gonna hurt em

So I got to change my ways

Change is coming no more running clouds are moving and it started getting sunny

I can see a little further and my future

Looking a little brighter cos I’m moving closer to the summit

They say that change is like a holiday

Taking a break can almost make

You fade away

Reevaluation of the situation

Then you face it and you own it

Like your own graduation day

This is my time this is my life

I’m gonna find a better way

Don’t let your past come and break you down

Just plant your feet on solid ground

It doesn’t matter what the people say

Just know that you can find a way

If theres a will then you can find a way

And I’m just trying to keep it real but I bet

You know the deal and how to feel

But you kinda move on with ya life

The situations holding you back

But you gotta keep your head up

And stay focused and to know whats real

You gotta keep it maintained

Because your life ain’t no game

And it can drive you insane gotta get that

fire the flame and keep it burning refrain

From all the wicked and lame

Because they enter your brain

And they can lead you to fail

Don’t let your past come and  break you down

Just plant your feet on solid ground

It doesn’t matter what the people say

Just know that you can find a way

Maintained because your life ain’t no game

And it can drive you insane gotta get that

Fire the flame and keep it burning refrain

From all the wicked and lame

It’s time to find a better way

It’s time to move its time to break

It’s time to find a better way

My time is coming my way

I’ve learnt from my mistakes

From the bottom see me elevate

You don’t really wanna see me fade away
