Chats To Fanbase Music Magazine About New Single Cult Of Prometheus, New Music Video, and Up Coming Album
Interviewed by Duzzy Clayton
The pioneers of the ‘New Wave of South African Heavy Metal’ are back on Friday the 13th of January with their new powerhouse single and music video ‘Cult of Prometheus’.
Deadline openly bow down to the memory of 80’s Thrash Metal, Power Metal, Heavy Metal and on occasion Sleaze Rock, as they march with intent and pride towards the release of their 3rd album, ‘Vitriol Inc’ that will undoubtedly be their most daring release yet.
Vocalist Jessy Switchblade shares that “This song is based on the story of Prometheus, who stole the fire from the Gods and gifted it to mankind. It’s about the free thinkers, those who spread hope, those with forethought, those who question everything and take action against what they’re told and what they’re forced to believe. This song is dedicated to them, to us, to the tragic hero roaming planet earth. Prometheus was the ultimate anti-hero, both a trickster and a hero, an advocate for humanity, a purveyor of rebellion. This song is dedicated to the trickster in every one of us, who will break or bend rules to be different, to rise above, to create beautiful, controlled rebellion.”
Jessy elaborates that “As far as the cover is concerned, we decided to do a tribute to old school power metal covers. This one is largely inspired by Manowar and Primal Fear. We tied it up to the story of Lady Blitzkrieg and Deadline, after Abigail’s Crypt, Deadline have captured her and tied her to the church steeple and the eagle has been sent to attack her (It mirrors the story of Prometheus).”
Hi Deadline, welcome back to Fanbase Music magazine, I am a long-time fan and am excited about the new single, how has the new single been received by the public since it was released on Friday 13th January?
Hi Duzzy, Thank you, the response has been amazing, since release the single had a great reception and been doing well
Can you tell us what the song is about and the story behind ‘Cult Of Prometheus’?
This song is based on the story of Prometheus who stole the fire from the Gods and gifted it to mankind. It’s about the free thinkers, those who spread hope, those with forethought, those that question everything and take action against what they’re told and what they’re forced to believe. This song is dedicated to them, to us, to the tragic hero roaming planet earth. Prometheus was the ultimate anti-hero, both a trickster and a hero, an advocate for humanity, a purveyor of rebellion. The song is telling you to think for yourself and join our cult. I’m a big fan of cults and how they work and have always wanted to write a song about this.
Where was the track recorded and who worked on it and produced it?
The track was recorded between Dread Studios and Gloryvale Studios owned by our bassist, Damian and drummer Mike respectively who over and above playing for Deadline are also our producer and engineer. So it’s a win win situation for us.
The track has a very cool music video out, can you tell us what is the concept behind the music video and where was it filmed?
Look we didn’t really have a budget so we got a massive black sheet, put it in the studio and decided to do a performance video. As the idea developed we had an idea to show me (Jessy Switchblade) tied and blindfolded and then the idea was to remove my shackles and start inviting the listener to join my cult. The video then pans to a section where the band tries to shackle me but in the end ultimately I blindfold and tie them. I thought the concept worked well with the song and it is a fairly simple concept too. Blind leading the blind. Very cultish.
The music video is very well done, can you tell us who filmed and worked on it?
The video was filmed by a good mate and die hard supporter of ours, Marius Els. He shot it with Mike’s help and Mike edited it. He’s also a video editor. (Man of many talents)
How has this single differed compared to what the band has released in the past?
It’s much heavier and faster. Guitars tones are different, crunchier and our midsection is fuller, ore powerful and roaring with vitriol. The new album is going to be way thrashier than anything else we’ve released and we believe that ‘Cult of Prometheus’ is a good representation of where we are headed as a band.
Will there be a new album coming out soon and what can you tell us about it?
Yeah there will be and there will be a host of singles released on a monthly basis before we release the album. We don’t have the exact release date yet but the album will come out sometime in May 2023. The album will be called ‘Vitriol Inc’ and will comprise of ten tracks and an intro. The next single is out on the 17th of February. As explained earlier the album will be heavier than our previous work however there will be different kinds of tracks on the album inspired by grunge, power metal, heavy metal and doom metal. (Not to mention thrash metal of course)
For people who are not familiar with the band members in the band, can you tell us who is in the band and what each person does?
Deadline are myself Jessy Switchblade on vocals one of the only two original members left. The Skullprit is the other and he is on lead and rhythm guitars. Also on guitars is Judge Mental and our newest members are Damian Dread on bass and Wrighteous Mike on drums.
Who are some of the band’s influences?
With the band members changing so have our influences however bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica and Megadeth remain strong influences. On this album we were also influenced by Alice In Chains, Testament, Slayer, Accept and a few others. We always keep it old school.
You will be playing MetalFeast at Rumours in February, can you tell us what we can expect from the band at that show?
We are looking very forward to playing that show. MetalFeast 2016 was where we were noticed for the first time. We are debuting a new cover which I am 100% sure the crowd will love and of course we’ll be playing the new single as well as another new song. We are obviously entering the new album cycle so expect a lot more new songs on stage this year.
