Intro
After a year of working on new material, South African Flash Rockers MARENE return with their new single ‘Partners In Crime’, the first from their upcoming album ‘Rising After Midnight’.
The track embodies the spirit of adventure and risk-taking that MARENE loves to explore, delivering infectious riffs and driving beats, designed to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. It captures the excitement and danger of a night out with someone you likely should not be hanging around with, but the rousing allure of the risk keeps you coming back for more! It’s about living in the moment and cherishing human connection … something to remember, especially in today’s fast-paced world

Questions
Hi, Guys welcome back to Fanbase Music Magazine, can we just remind the readers who is in the band and what each band member does?
MARENE is a rock band that puts the “show” in rock show. We pride ourselves in our ability to entertain and we take our performances very seriously. We all want to put on a show that could rival musical theatre with outlandish colours, interactive set pieces and larger than life characters. MARENE is a 5-piece band comprising of Tyler Duggan (myself) on Rhythm Guitars and Lead Vocals, Ozzey Padayachee on Bass and Lead Vocals, Maronay Todkill on Keyboards and Lead Vocals, Arian Helm on Lead Guitar and Vocals and Skye Nagel on Drums and Vocals. Each member of MARENE is a triple threat. We can all sing, dance and play instruments at the same time. We love writing sing-along choruses that blend great, catchy pop hooks with really solid rock riffs. After all, we like to promote ourselves as writing rock music you can dance to.
Can you tell us about your band name and what it means?
MARENE is anything you want it to be. It could be like the Marine Army because we got to war every night on stage to give the audience one helluva experience, or it could be like the ocean’s tide. Just like the tide that comes in and out, so do tastes in fashion and genres of music. We’d like to bring in a new tidal wave of theatrical rock experiences. You could almost say that we substituted the ‘i’ for an ‘e’ in MARENE because the extra ‘e’ stands for entertainment.
Ok let’s talk about the new single called ‘Partners in Crime’ What is the song about?
Partners in Crime is about that feeling you get when you’re experiencing something new for the first time and you stop and hesitate, almost like when your jam is too sweet. You take a second and doubt that your choices are the right ones instead of living in the moment and allowing yourself to escape into an exciting adventure. The song follows two characters as they make their way through the night, sneaking away and leaving their lives behind under the guise of darkness to be together.
Where was the track recorded and worked on it?
The track was recorded at Africa Sun Studios in Cape Town with an amazing Engineer, Alan Simmonds. We’ve worked with Alan on the past two EPs, “Something’s Out There” and “After Life”, and we felt like we finally could take everything we had learnt from the past two releases and improve them tenfold. So, we decided to do it the old fashion way, five members in a studio together, a live mic’d up Drum kit, Marshall stacks, Keyboard racks, and enough decibels to raise the dead.
When is the new single expected to be released?
“Partners in Crime” comes out to all streaming platforms on the 26th of April, and we cannot wait for people to hear, what we believe, to be the next evolution in MARENE’s sound.
What is on the card for the rest of 2023 in terms of more singles and possibly also a music video and album?
2023 is shaping up to be an important year for MARENE. We’ve got another two singles lined up with our first full length album on the way. We’re also planning an album launch party which we’ll be officially announcing very soon. We might even take the opportunity to record the show for music videos.
Where can we see you playing live?
We’re planning a massive party to celebrate everything MARENE as well as our upcoming Album. We’ll be blowing a hole in the roof at The Daisy Jones in Cape Town on the 1st of July with an 18 song setlist featuring some good old MARENE bangers along with some of the new killer tracks.
