Extending a helping hand
RADA focuses on “Tough Times” during July and encourages people to reach out to the vulnerable in their communities by offering comfort and support. We do not live in an ideal world and going through tough times is a part of life for many, resulting in a range of emotions which may include feeling sad, frustrated and anxious. It is important to recognize the value of supporting one another during difficult times. Building a
strong support systems within our communities can make a difference in overcoming hurdles and developing resilience.
Having empathy is what defines us as human beings. We are distinguished by the need to feel cared for and the desire to care for others. Make an effort to interact with those around you. Small acts of kindness can have a significant and positive impact on the challenging situation
others may find themselves facing. Remind those going through tough times that they are not alone and that tough times do pass. RADA continues to extend its reach and is currently supporting 31 homes, centres and projects situated in vulnerable communities in Gauteng, Limpopo, Free State, Mpumalanga and Northwest Provinces (2022: 23, 2021: 18, 2020: 13 homes and centres). The addition of beneficiaries, such as old age homes, orphanages, places of safety, homeless shelters, day-care centres, schools and homes for the physically and mentally challenged, is a sad reflection of an increase in tough times being felt by many individuals, families and communities around us.
Take time to determine the immediate needs within your community by contacting a local NGO, reading your community newspaper, joining a social media or community group or chatting with friends, colleagues and neighbours. Decide how you can assist, even if it’s in a small way and encourage others to do the same. Let us keep the spirit of Ubuntu alive which is the essence of humanity. We are who we are through our interconnectedness, promoting cooperation between individuals, cultures and nations. Ubuntu: I am what I am because of who we all are.
