The Taylor Swift Eras Tour Film Review Told By A Real Swifty
Reviewed by Sarah Jade
I woke up on the 14th of October feeling ecstatic, as I knew I was going to be watching The Eras Tour film later that day. I had been waiting months for the release, and finally, the day had come. I got my voice ready to hit some extremely high notes, stretched out my body to Shake it off, and even made sure my boyfriend was prepped, ready, and wearing an Eras Tour-appropriate outfit.
One thing about us Swifties is that we love to obsess over the tiniest details Taylor gives us, and we love creating chants and repeating certain catchphrases or chants various Swifties have come up with over the years. So, to prepare my boyfriend for the Swiftie madness, I played him all the important songs in the car ride to the cinema and taught him all the chants and catchphrases we needed to scream during the songs. As a Swiftie, I felt that it was my duty to educate him on these important details.
We arrived at the Ster Kinekor, buzzing with excitement, and I could no longer hold the excitement in once I had seen the posters, cardboard cutouts, and endless amounts of Taylor Swift images plastered all over the cinema. To my surprise, Ster Kinekor had come up with a Taylor Swift-themed combo deal that you could purchase before the movie. This combo came with popcorn, a drink of your choice, a candy bracelet (which is a reference to one of Taylors’ songs that says “So make the friendship bracelets”), and a packet of pink and blue marshmallows (which links perfectly to Taylor’s Lover era). This combo enhanced my experience in the best way possible. I was not aware that Ster Kinekor created these themed combos, so when I saw the ad I almost started crying. This combo fits the theme of the film so well, and I think Ster Kinekor did such an amazing job at making the film and the Swifties feel special.
To say I felt giddy with excitement is an understatement. I felt as though my body was vibrating with excitement, and the feeling that I might explode kept building up as each advertisement before the film played. As the intro song played and all you could hear was Taylor singing “It’s been a long time coming” the tears began flowing, and I felt as though I could not breathe air anymore. The film was magical, Taylor is enchanting, and the Eras Tour was so incredibly well done! Throughout the film, I cried many tears, lost my voice, danced my heart out, sang every single song, and had the best time doing it all. Seeing the young girls get up out of their seats to dance around under the screen as their favorite songs played truly made my heart happy. Taylor Swift has such a beautiful way of writing her lyrics, putting them into music, and telling stories through her songwriting and music making, and to see these gorgeous songs paired with enchanting visuals and visual storytelling was magical. Taylor Swift’s stage presence is one of a kind, her backup dancers, vocalists, and band are incredible, the choreography was outstanding, and the planning, time, and effort put into this tour is remarkable.
I have been a huge Swiftie since I was about six years old, and have been praying for the day Taylor decided to add South Africa to the list of her International tour countries. However, we South African Swifties are still here after 19 years of Taylor being in the industry, waiting patiently for her. About halfway through the film, it occurred to me that this was possibly the closest many of us South African Swifties would ever come to seeing Taylor live or going to one of her stadium shows. This made me feel sad, yet at the same time, I felt such a rush of gratitude that I could be sitting there in the cinema, watching the film, experiencing all the eras, and having an incredible time whilst doing it.
We left the movie theatre feeling like we were on the moon as every little detail of the film played back in our minds, and we sang the songs in the car the whole way back home. Ster Kinekor gave us some complimentary Eras Tour posters, which of course went up on my bedroom wall. And as this experience came to an end, I will be thinking about it, and telling everyone I know about how incredible it was.
I would like to thank Ster-Kinekor Cinemas for the awesome opportunity and great experience of an amazing day out.
