Interview
Hi Sarah, welcome back to Fanbase Music Magazine, can you remind the readers, where you are from and how long you have been writing music?
I am currently situated in Pretoria but have been all over the show since I was little. I spent most of my childhood in Nelspruit, where not much went on, and in this small town, I had big dreams. However, I only gained the confidence to start writing my own music in 2022, and have been writing ever since.
What got you into music?
One of the first CDs I ever owned was Fearless by Taylor Swift. I would play this CD on my little pink radio on repeat, wishing I could transform into Taylor. This love for Taylor grew stronger as I grew up, and was inspired heavily by Taylor. So much so, that I learnt to play the guitar when I was 13, in hopes of becoming one step closer to Taylor.
Apart from doing music, what other jobs do you have and do you feel it gets in your way of concentrating on music?
I am currently in my second year of studying to get my teaching degree, as well as having a couple of teaching and tutoring jobs, I’m kept very busy.
The last time we spoke you were releasing your track My Favorite Time, how do you feel that song did as your first release I think it did very well on the radio, etc.
My Favourite Time was a song I had gotten the opportunity to write and record as a prize I had won by placing first in a singing competition called PACISA. Along with the recording, mixing, and mastering of the song, I had also won a 6-month marketing deal with an amazing marketing team called The Marketing Zoo. The Marketing Zoo skyrocketed My Favourite Time and surpassed all of my expectations. I have been so grateful for them, and all of the various marketing teams and individuals who have aided in the song’s success throughout this year of My Favourite Time being out.
How would you describe your sound to people who don’t know your music?
I would describe the sound of I Don’t Like You as Taylor Swift mixed with a little bit of Olivia Rodrigo’s album GUTS! However, my sound as a whole could be described as Taylor Swift meets Noah Kahan meets Olivia Rodrigo meets Alanis Morissette!
Okay, let’s talk about your new single, I Don’t Like You, what is the song about?
The song was written about someone I once knew, adored, and was very close to. I looked up to and cared for this person very much, but at the time didn’t realise how toxic they were for me. Everyone was very against me being with this person, and one day the ball dropped for me. This person had let me down for the last time, and all I could think was ‘Hey, I don’t like them as much as I thought I did’ which led to I Don’t Like You!
Where did you record the song and who worked on the music and producing?
I recorded the song with Limrinse, who mixed, mastered, recorded, and produced the track. Throughout the recording of the song, I had the likes of Peter Toussaint, Johan Zadelhoff, and Lefokolodi band join in on the recording process! However, the end product features Peter Toussaint, Shinesh Ramballi, Yakean Van Vuuren, and I.
What was the recording process like?
We had a lot of collaboration throughout the making of this song, as I was still unsure about what I would like my first independent single to sound like. I am so unbelievably grateful for everyone who helped me come up with, find, and refine my sound!
The marketing build-up for the single was amazing where you got different people to where a certain kind of sunglasses, can you tell us how that idea came about?
I was gifted the glasses by my mom a few months ago, as she thought they would match my hair perfectly. It took me quite a while to figure it all out, but once I had booked a photoshoot with Fullspectrum Media to get some pictures taken for the single cover, the idea came to me! I thought it would be so cool to write I Don’t Like You on the glasses. And slowly but surely it dawned on me that I could use the glasses for promo. I go to a lot of gigs and see quite a decent amount of people, so I just thought ‘Why not’.
Will you be releasing an album and what can we expect from it?
This is not only my first album, but my first independent album, which means that I’ve got quite a few growing pains to go through to find my sound, and to find what I would like my debut album to sound like (and of course, I’m a little bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my music). With this all being said, I don’t want to rush it, and will definitely let the universe work how it should. So for now, there are no deadlines, however, we’re already working on the next single to be released, and the album will be out soon enough:)
Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for our readers?
Thank you for giving me this amazing opportunity! I’d love to thank everyone who has supported me, taken part in the I Don’t Like You promo, and to everyone who has listened to my music!
