Interview
Hi David Welcome back to Fanbase Music Magazine, always a pleasure to feature you, how have you been since your last release namely, Face in the Mirror?
Hi Duzzy, thanks for the invite back to Fanbase Music Magazine. We have been really busy since the release of ‘Face In The Mirror’ and we were pleased about how this track was received by the public and radio stations. As we move forward to 2024 THPSongs are hoping this year will be as successful as 2023.
Your son is a big part of what you do, please can you give him a shout and how he helps you with your music?
Allan runs RhetoricSound, which is a business that helps artists and musicians with covers, CGI music videos, social media content, radio plays, and artist websites.
Allan is an integral part of THPSongs and does most of our IT and in fact, is helping me fill out this form as we speak.
How would you describe your sound?
As a songwriter/composer, I don’t really have a sound as such, as I write and compose in different genres I continually use different sounds on different projects. Unlike bands, who develop their sound over the years, songwriters tend not to stick to the same vibe or sound in my experience.
How long have you been doing music?
My father sent me to piano lessons when I was 7 years old, I started playing guitar at the age of 13, so let’s say I have been involved with music for a very, very long time.
What inspires you the most to write music?
To be honest, nothing really inspires me to do it. I think it must be my DNA that I just do it for the love of it, where the notion takes me, and that has always been the case.
Where is the strangest place and time that you were inspired to write a song?
I tend to come up with most of my ideas either when I dream them, or when I’m out for a brisk walk melody sometimes comes to me. I can also get some inspiration if I sit down at the piano or pick up a guitar.
Some people might know you from THP, can you just explain again what is THP?
THPSongs stands for Torrance, Hollywood, and Phillips. Unfortunately Gerry Hollywood passed away 7 years ago on the 28th of January, and Drew Phillips retired in 2019. So now THPSongs is solely run by myself and my son Allan.
You recently released a Christmas track with Jodie Louise, can you tell me how she came on your radar and working with her?
Our Christmas track by Jodie Louise called ‘Ring Out The Old’ is one of four tracks that I have written for Jodie Louise. I first met her after doing auditions a few years ago, and out of a 3 dozen singers, I chose Jodie, and another two artists who I continue to work with.
Okay let’s talk about the amazing new single, Loved You So Much, can you tell us the background behind this single?
I actually wrote this song a very long time ago, and more recently recorded it, it’s a bittersweet love song and is one of the very few songs that I have written lyrics, music, and melody, and incidentally played all the instruments myself.
What was the recording process like?
I used a different process when I recorded this song because everything started from scratch in Stealth Recording Studio. There was no pre-production work on it, we started with a blank canvas, and with the help of Eddie Macarthur (Sound engineer/Producer), we managed to produce this song in a couple of days. It also took a little longer than most because we started with nothing and I was playing every instrument myself.
Did you come up with the lyrics or the music first?
I tend to come up with music with maybe one or two lines, in this case, the line would’ve been ‘Loved You So Much’ and I would have written the rest lyrics around that one line.
Will you have any other new music coming out?
Yes, we will. 2024 will be a very busy year for THPSongs. We will be releasing new tracks by Roy Henderson, Bianca, Gerry Duncan, Jodie Louise, and myself over the coming year.
Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for our readers?
THPSongs have gone from strength to strength over the last 5 years, and we will continue to work hard at our craft and write and produce original music and compositions going forward, our motto is ‘Onwards and Upwards’ – You can find everything you need to know about THPSongs, at THPSongs.com
