How would you define your musical genre, both as individual artists and when collaborating?

Onlogies Answer: ‘Onlogies’ means Illogical. I chose the name to be as free as possible, not sticking to a specific genre, style, or structure. There are so many genres in music; when I released my first single, I think it took me about 15 minutes to decide which genre I should select.

TomyV Answer: I have been doing Afro-Pop for a while now. Onlogies and I started working on some Pop songs and released a couple in 2023. We have now released our single, “Another Ghost,” which falls in the Vocal Adult Contemporary genre.

Who were some of your influences during your formative years?

Onlogies Answer: My main influence as a teenager was Lucas Maree. I like the singer-songwriter genre for its rawness and unpretentiousness.

TomyV Answer: There is an array of people who inspired me, but I was most inspired by the “breaking into natural singing” in our communities. This would happen after a soccer match, church, school, community choir, and so on. All the unorganized singing is just an inspiration. I believe it is a cultural thing. We just sing; we have a lot of folk songs and songs that developed over centuries that are just part of our culture. Music is, therefore, in us and most certainly in me. I can guarantee you, that if you are in a black community and you sit around a fire without electricity, you will hear someone singing, and we will just start singing together. We have the “Umzabalazo” Struggle songs, and it’s as if the whole community is in tune breaking into song.

Do you play any musical instruments? If so, could you specify the instruments and their respective brands?

Onlogies Answer: I play the guitar; I have a Takamine Classical guitar which is my partner in music and then a Squire Strat and a Yamaha Acoustic. On the production side, I am using Ableton on the Focusrite System, which is a tremendous entry-level product. I don’t think I will ever need anything else. I am planning to start with the Piano this year.

TomyV Answer: I dabble a bit on the piano, but I am very keen to learn the guitar and piano. At the moment, my voice is my instrument.

Let’s delve into your latest single, “Another Ghost.” Can you shed some light on the inspiration behind the song?

Onlogies Answer: This song was written in the years when I was dating. One generally likes things about someone and then also dislikes things about someone. But getting to know someone is not trying to find them to be perfect but rather to like them the way they are with all their imperfections. Another ghost means another resemblance of the perfect person you are looking for. We grow up watching movies and fairy tales and how perfect everything is; well, it generally isn’t, but that is not a bad thing. The “ups” are so much better after the “downs” and getting to know someone and growing together and becoming better together, that is what it is all about. Loving the imperfect perfectly.

Onlogies, having a home studio for recording your music, could you walk us through the creative process?

Onlogies Answer: It starts with the music, with playing the guitar or trying out new things in production. Something sounds good on the ear, and generally, then a song writes itself through that inspiration.

TomyV, how did you approach and personalize the rendition of such a song?

TomyV Answer: I need to listen to a song a few times to try and understand it and to get to know the song. The more I get to know the song and learn the lyrics off by heart, the more it becomes part of me and the more I can bring my flavour to the song. This song spoke to me immediately; I felt at ease with this song from the day I heard it first.

Can we expect future collaborations between the two of you?

Onlogies Answer: Yes, most certainly; we already have a few songs to revive again as well as a few ideas we are trying to bring to life.

TomyV, you are also part of another band; could you share some insights into that project?

TomyV Answer: We call ourselves “The Joint”, which consists of five members (two Lead Vocals, a Bassist, a Drummer, and a Pianist). The band was established in 2018, and ever since we started, we’ve been receiving good remarks about our sound and delivery. We’ve performed in Various places in and out of Gauteng and currently we are working towards being a resident band for one prominent venue in our area. “The Joint” believes in the power of music to connect people and break down barriers. Our Versatility reflects a commitment to diversity, unity, and the celebration of musical fusion.

We appreciate your time for this interview. Do you have any final messages for our readers?

Onlogies Answer: We would ultimately want to inspire musicians to collaborate across different genres and with various cultural mixes. The various cultures in South Africa bring so much natural music and musicians. The undiscovered talent pool in South Africa and Africa is huge. We are at the start of a journey, and we are grateful for any exposure we can get. Thank you very much for what you do for the South African music industry. And for the musicians and fans, face your fears; you will never please all the people all the time, so you might as well do what you love.
