Century City launches new outdoor concert series, the Ratanga Park Sunset Concerts,

featuring Die Heuwels Fantasties on Sunday 25 February 2024.

With rapper Jitsvinger as the opening act.

In collaboration with CTMA and the CC Arts Foundation.

The Ratanga Park Sunset Concerts at Century City will be held once a month at the beautifully transformed Ratanga Park, with the first concert featuring the phenomenal SAMA Award-winning Afrikaans Alternative band, Die Heuwels Fantasties, and opening act, the popular Cape Flats rapper, Jitsvinger. Fun-loving music enthusiasts can look forward to a picnic-style music experience with the iconic scenic backdrops that are distinctive to this beautiful area.

Century City, and the previous offering of Ratanga Junction, has long been a comfortable logistical landmark for visitors from Cape Town and surrounds. Since Ratanga Junction closed its doors in 2018, Rabie Property Group started with the creation park in 2020, transforming the space into a new and improved location that offers a low-stress lifestyle of balance and well-being.

In terms of the new direction in presenting large-scale events, the Carols by Candlelight which was traditionally held in Central Park since 2009, was renamed Carols in the Park and moved to Ratanga Park in 2022. The 2023 event was held on Sunday 3 December, where 2000 attendees came together on the lawn in the park and enjoyed a family-friendly evening.

“This is where the vision for a series of summer concerts was conceptualized”, says Nico McLachlan, Managing Director of Cape Town Music Academy. (CTMA) “The scenic park with its beautiful green open spaces, situated on the banks of the Century City canals, is the perfect setting for large outdoor music concerts. We are excited to bring live music to Ratanga Park, a perfect oasis for a summer evening outing, where families and friends can picnic and listen to contemporary music by top bands as the sun sets with the beautiful backdrop of Table Mountain.”

Die Heuwels Fantasties, one of Cape Town`s most successful Afrikaans music groups, will be performing at the inaugural concert on Sunday, 25 February.  Their polished, high-energy performances which include several radio hit songs, have made them one of the most sought-after bands in South Africa over the past decade and a half. Vocalist Pierre Greeff says: “2024 marks our 15th year as Die Heuwels Fantasties. We are ready to bring you some of the best familiar tunes in our repertoire, as well as a couple of new tracks that were released over the past few months. We cannot wait! Hope to see you there!”

The multi-award-winning Cape Flats rapper and composer, Jitsvinger, will be bringing his vivid wordplay and boom-rap-drenched Afrikaans music to the stage, including music from all his hits including sparks from his latest album that will be dropping soon. On the decks, Jitsvinger is inviting a long-standing partner in crime, DJ Willy who will be providing the scratches and mixes while he delivers his super-sonic soliloquys at the helm.

The Sunset Concerts are picnic-style events, suitable for the whole family. Gates open at 16:00 and the concert starts at 17h00. Guests may bring their own picnics, but no alcoholic beverages and glass bottles are permitted. There will be wine and beer for sale at the concert, as well as food offerings from local food trucks. Concertgoers are also requested not to bring tables, chairs, and gazebos since these interfere with the sight lines of other patrons.

More information about the creation of Ratanga Park, Century City:

The new Ratanga Park and waterbody is the most recent and significant addition to the Century City urban landscape and a substantial component of the redevelopment of the Ratanga Junction theme park site. Ratanga Park was created by moving a total of 75 000m3 earth, with a water body that covers approximately 1.64ha of water. Water features, winding walking paths, points of interest and a play area for children have been created amongst lush landscaping.

The park`s planting theme is a composition of formal tree avenues that transforms into rolling lawns amidst indigenous, shady forest edges with sheltered grassy glades sweeping down to the perched, floriferous Cape wetland edge, all set around the naturally reconfigured lake, islands and canals. Many of existing large trees and palms were retained, as well as two Ratanga Junction Theme Park bridges. This beautiful green open space is open to the public.
