Ladies and gentlemen I come to you with a very exciting review, Daniel J Dunn, South Africa’s newest up-and-coming superstar has just dropped his debut single, namely, I Don’t Need U, and guess what? It is awesome.

Daniel J Dunn hailing from the seas of Cape Town, is a young vibrant talented musician who despite only releasing his first single has already made a big mark in the world.

I Don’t Need U, is a cool track with a hint of R&B and POP elements but later in the song has a bit of a rock feel to it as the guitar lead solo takes over the song, let me talk you through it.

Starting with a cool beat and then a bit of a cool piano play, the intro has a bit of an Eminem feel to it, which draws me in straight away. Being a rock and metal fan myself, I must say it is so cool to open your mind to other genres, and over the years I have enjoyed the experience of listening to other music, Daniel J Dunn’s new track is one of those I have enjoyed.

Now looking at Daniel and also spoken to him over Zoom for an interview for my podcast (Listen HERE), one thing I have to mention is Daniel J Dunn is still very young, which is amazing to know a young guy, with his whole life ahead of him has released such a great banger of a song, I Don’t Like U is quality top track with amazing vocals and music and I now consider him one of the best next big things to come out of South Africa. Daniel J Dunn has a bright future ahead of him.

Daniel’s vocals on the track remind me of those rap/ R&B songs that used to play on MTV Base, Daniel seems to own the song and I am just a few lines into the song and I am already feeling captivated by the lyrics, and vocals.

When I interviewed Daniel about the track he said the song is about being in a toxic relationship and despite all the things he went through, he came out the other side and now realizes he doesn’t need that person anymore. which I think is a great message for anyone who is in a toxic relationship, if you are not happy you can leave, and you will be much happier for it.

I Dont Need U, is a song that can be liked by all kinds of music lovers because although the song is very R&B dominated, the song does take a 360 turn in the middle of the track because out of nowhere, this killer guitar solo starts to play and suddenly I am asking did Carlos Santana just feature on this track because the solo has that sort of vibes, but then when you realize who is behind the solo guitar work and most of the other instruments, it then all starts to make sense. Mark Haze who needs no introduction is the man behind the guitar solo and other instruments, kind of putting a rock feel on the track, thus making the song go in a different direction. and also, like so many other musicians we have featured in this Magazine, Mark produced the track. I consider Mark Haze to be one of the country’s top musicians but also one of the best producers I have heard work on music who is not scared to tackle different genres and does it very well. This secret weapon that Daniel had on his track in the name of Mark Haze was just the stuff needed to take the song over the edge and appeal to a bigger market. I do hope these two musicians will work together again on other tracks.

I see this song doing well on commercial stations all around the world, so I do hope stations like 5FM, Highveld 947 and Jacaranda FM pick up this song because it is amazing for that kind of radio and I do think we will see Daniel J Dunn on a festival stage someday soon.

Daniel J Dunn may be young but this guy is going places and he is off to a great start, Daniel J Dunn, Remember that name because you going to see it lights one day.
