Interview

Hi Lucy, welcome to Fanbase Music Magazine, Can we start by telling us where you are from?

Hiya, I’m from Wolverhampton in the UK but I’m currently living in Surrey, about 20 minutes from Heathrow Airport, for university.

How did you get into music?

I was always singing around the house, I remember using the lyric pages you would get with albums to learn all the songs and sing along in my bedroom. I then started doing musical theatre when I was about 8 or 9 and went to a performing arts school in Birmingham when I was 14 to 18.

Do you play any instruments?

I play guitar and piano. I’ve always been obsessed with Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran and after watching Nashville the TV show I asked my mom if I could start guitar lessons and get my first guitar so I could write songs like Taylor, Ed, and the characters on the show. Since then I haven’t stopped writing songs and singing. I started the piano because my granddad passed down a piano from his granddad, so it was originally my great-great granddad’s. But no one in my family has been musical since him so it was really meaningful to be able to play it.

How would you describe your sound and genre?

My music is folk/pop with little bits of country and soul thrown in there. It’s very acoustic and based heavily on lyrics. I love to tell a story through my songs and make them meaningful to people when they listen to them.

What sort of music are you into and also what did you grow up on?

As I mentioned earlier, I am slightly too obsessed with Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. I just love them, their lyrics, and their style of music. Lyrics are the first thing I hear when I listen to music so people like Sam Fender, Noah Kahan, and Lewis Capaldi are all up there for me.

I grew up with a lot of bands. My mom loves The Police, my dad loves rock music so there was AC/DC in the car with him and my aunt and uncle played a lot (a lot) of the Beatles and Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons. So I was surrounded by all these amazing bands. My favorite band, a lot more contemporary, is 5 Seconds of Summer. I’ve been to pretty much every tour…so good.

Okay let’s talk about your single Red Ink, what is the song about and what is the story behind it?

I wrote this song about 5 years ago so it’s been a long time coming. It’s a classic country breakup song, think Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood – very much a slashing tires vibe hahah. I hadn’t been through a break-up but I was angry at someone so that’s kind of where it came from (and I also really wanted to write a sassy song).

Where was the track recorded and who worked on it?

We recorded this at the Loft Studio which is the base for B Side Recording. Hollie Beadell (the owner of B Side) and Archie Gouldsborough are the producers on the track, as well as the whole album. I’m playing guitar, Archie is on the drums and we had a session musician for the bass. It’s one of the few songs on the album that has a full band and is upbeat so it was so much fun to record!

Will you be releasing an album soon and what can you tell us about it?

Yes, my debut album is coming out this summer! I’m so so excited for it. We got to record over half of the album at the iconic Abbey Road Studios which was insane. I still can’t believe it happened to be honest. Red Ink is the first single and then the second will be out in May and then the whole album. There are about 11 tracks including a duet with Boy Blue who’s an extremely talented friend of mine. I can’t wait!

When you write music can you tell us what the process is like from start to finish?

When I start writing a song I usually have some sort of idea of what it’s going to be about, whether it’s an idea of a storyline or I’m writing about something I’m going through at that moment. Either I’ll have some sort of melody in mind or I will start messing around with chords until something sparks. I prefer to finish a song in one session, I tend to sing what feels right and then write it down and record it once I’ve done at least a verse or two and a chorus. The only exceptions to this are if I’m writing a completely imaginary story as I am really thinking about the wording and where it’s going to go but if it’s about me then I just let it all come out.

How would you describe a live experience of yours?

It’s pretty intimate, I perform as just myself and my guitar. It’s quite nice because I can get to know the audience and interact with them but I would love to have a band on stage with me one day – you can’t beat a live band. I think I will always perform a few songs as I do now though no matter what as this is how I wrote the songs so it’s nice to strip them back. I think a sign of a good song is if you can strip it completely back and it sounds just as good.

If you could collaborate with any musician who would it be?

Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran. I don’t even have to think about it. I mean this is the third time I’ve mentioned them in this interview, I love their music. They have inspired me through everything I do with my music. I don’t think I would have picked up a guitar without them, so to collaborate with them…wow, that’s THE dream, forget everything else.

Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for our readers?

If you like the sound of my music (or even if you don’t) please go check it out, it would mean so much to me.
