Coming up: “Requiem” Youth Day fundraiser for Buskaid – 14 June 2024, Bailey’s Bedfordview

Written by Matthew Nijland

In commemoration of Youth Day 2024, Bailey’s Bedfordview is hosting the Requiem music concert on 14 June, which is aimed at raising funds for music education in Soweto.

This event’s target goal is to raise R10 000 for Buskaid, a registered musical charity offering high quality string instrument tuition to underprivileged young people at its music school in Soweto, Johannesburg.

This is a wonderfully fitting initiative which is giving back to today’s Sowetan youth, as Youth Day commemorates the 1976 Soweto Uprising which was led by the youth of the day against the apartheid government’s discriminatory education policies.

The concert will feature spectacular performances by the 17-piece Buskaid string ensemble, as well as an epic lineup of Johannesburg alternative and metal bands who are generously donating their time and effort to support the cause.

The bands include Wacken Metal Battle SA 2024 finalists (and event organisers) Desert Mother, fast-rising punk-metal dudes Lefokolodi, prog metal legends Raptorbaby, and exciting newcomer punkers Zondo Commission.

The event is also being backed by the local music promoters at Planet Karavan and We Did This Records.

All proceeds from tickets sold will go directly to Buskaid. Tickets can be bought via the event’s Quicket page for R100 here: https://www.quicket.co.za/events/258312-requiem-buskaid-fundraiser/#/. Donations are also welcome and can be paid at the same link. Tickets can alternatively be bought at the door on the night for R120.

The Buskaid Ensemble, which will be performing on 14 June at Bailey’s Bedfordview

For 30 years, Buskaid has presented underprivileged children with musical education and opportunities. The school was opened in the 1990s by Rosemary Nalder and provides Sowetan youths with musical education, specialising in string instruments such as violin, cello and double bass.

Please consider supporting this fantastic cause to help continue bringing education and music to the children of Soweto. Fanbase Music Magazine will see you there as we will be covering and reporting on the event.

You can watch the Buskaid Ensemble rehearsing with Desert Mother for their upcoming ensemble performance on the Buskaid Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/Buskaid/videos/767963075450490
