The Color Blew: Discount Hearts

The Color Blew is a band I have known and been a fan of for many years, and it is awesome to see them rising from strength to strength with each track, following their music throughout the years. I can honestly say their latest single, Discount Hearts, is nothing like what they have released before. Yes, it has that The Color Blew sound we come to love, but Liaan Horton’s voice (vocalist) sounds different on this track, and the band has turned up a notch. I mean, they have always released quality, and I do know the band does work hard to make sure they release only the best, but this latest release has all the right formulas to make a huge rock-hit single. Besides Liaan’s great voice, musically, the rest of the band, (George, Tim, and Armando) do what they always do: play very well and to perfection with passion, fitting in great with Liaan’s voice and lyrics and important guitar playing.
One thing I loved about this band is that they seem to know each other so well, almost like they know what each other is thinking, and it shows in their playing and how tight the band is in playing their instruments.
Lyrically, the band has once again come across beautifully and has once again touched on an important subject. Liaan, always great with words, has once again achieved writing a great song that is also radio-friendly, which I think would do well on radio all around the world.
When asked what the song is about, Liaan Horton had this to say: “Do you ask for a discount? Or do you simply discount yourself to everyone and everything? Discounted hearts are where it starts, but not where it ends. Settling for a version accepted when it’s discounted enough to afford but not really what you want. Just close your eyes and look away. Let it happen—your job, your happiness, your heartache, your dinner, your choices—it all ends the same way.

This song is a moment within yourself, a deeply private reflection in an easy-to-swallow wrapper. Pounding like your exploding heart before you kiss the girl, soothing like the embrace you feel when you close your eyes and drift away in a thunderous haze of infatuation. This song is raw, ready, and real, just like we wanted it to be: straight-up backbeat-kicking passion! Exactly what sets us free!”
The Color Blew has always been deep with their songs and lyrics, but having followed this band for a long time, I can feel this is a “grown-up Color Blew” we are seeing. A band that has gotten stronger over the years; they were always going to be amazing. I knew that from the start I heard them; I just didn’t realize how good this band would be, and I am very proud of how far the band has come and how the music has matured over the years.
What makes this track even more amazing is that the band records and produces all their stuff, they are so good that know just how to get the most out of each band member and be able to put into a quality recording,
I can picture myself listening to this song when I just need a great South African band or just want a proper rock band on my playlist as I am contemplating life.
I would like to congratulate Liaan, George, Armando, and Timothy on an amazing song. I can’t wait to see what comes out next, but one thing is for sure: it is going to be amazing.

Lyrics

She said she’s tired and she’s falling apart

He said he loved her but he went and broke her heart

Safe on the surface bubble underneath

Baby tonight it begins

Backbeat kicking she drops down to her knees

Daddy’s got the candy the scream she begs she pleads

Affirmation seeking she always aims to please

Is it really ever enough

Close your eyes and look away

Cause inside we still feel the same

Close your eyes and look away

Cause inside we still stay the same

He said he loved her but he don’t know where to start

Every time she leaves she rips his heart apart

Infatuated bound by all her strings

Baby tonight it begins

Backbeat kicking she drops down to her knees

Daddy’s got the candy the scream she begs she pleads

Affirmation seeking she always aims to please

Is it really ever enough

Close your eyes and look away

Cause inside we still feel the same

Close your eyes and look away

Cause inside we still stay the same
