Interview

Hi Eli, welcome to Fanbase Music Magazine,  please tell us where you are from and what is your earliest memory of wanting to do music.

I’m from Englewood, Florida, but for the past six months, I’ve been living in Nashville, Tennessee. I was fourteen when I first started playing the guitar, and thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, I had a lot of time on my hands. I would play the guitar whenever I felt lost or disillusioned, and eventually, I started writing my own music. I can remember staring at my television watching The Backseat Lovers playing Lollapalooza, and knowing in my gut that music is what I wanted to do with my life.

How would you describe your sound and genre?

I would describe my music as the sound of leaves blowing in the wind, as if each leaf had a little instrument, and they formed a band, traveling together on the breeze and having a great time. In terms of genre, I usually write a mix of jazz-influenced Indie-pop/Alternative Rock.

What instruments do you play?

Although I know a small bit of piano and bass, I mostly play guitar and sing.

What are some of the bands and music that have influenced your music?

Some of my biggest influences are Stevie Wonder, The Moss, and The Backseat Lovers. All of these artists have their own unique sound and play around with cool rhythms, fun melodies and riffs, which I truly enjoy.

You are a solo musician, but do you play or record with other musicians?

Yes, currently I’m working on multiple projects with different musicians. Hopefully, they will be released as singles in the next 2-3 months!

Okay, let’s talk about your latest single, Pick-Up Sticks, what is the song about?

“Pick-Up Sticks” is about my realization that if you are with the people that you care about, you don’t necessarily need to physically go somewhere to escape the stress and anxiety of things. I learned that even things that aren’t as fun or interesting like the board game “Pick-up Sticks” can be valuable.

Where was the track recorded and who worked on the single?

Pick-Up Sticks and the rest of the songs on the new EP were recorded at Pearl Sound Studios in Canton, Michigan. My friend Santiago Alcantara was the session drummer and background vocalist for this song and all the other songs on the EP. Nathan Sinn and Corey Fuson worked as producers and audio engineers, and Chuck Alkazian produced, mixed, and mastered the songs.

What was the recording process like?

First, we recorded scratch tracks for all the songs, so that we had the tempo and structure down. After that, we tracked live drums and recorded the real instruments and vocals. There was actually a lead guitar part on the second chorus of the song that I had added at the last minute while we were recording the final instruments.

The single has a cool animation lyric video, can you tell us what was the concept behind the music video?

The imagery and objects in the animation are all based on my grandparent’s lake house in Michigan. It was somewhere we would always go when I was growing up and the place I had in mind while writing the song.

Who worked on the music video?

I commissioned Fakhrul (@fakhrul894) on Fiverr to make a hand-drawn lyric video with instructions based on what I was looking for. He was very patient and was quick to respond to my many revisions, which I appreciated.

What is your hope for anyone who listens to the track?

My hope is that the song will bring some sort of escape or peace of mind to people who are stressed about where they are. If it does neither of those things then I hope at least they have a great day.

Do you have any other music coming out shortly and what can you tell us about that?

My next single, “Overthinker”, comes out on November 29th and there will be one or two more singles before the rest of the Tire Swing EP is out.

Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for our readers?

Thank you so much for having me, I appreciate every person willing to take the time to listen. It means a lot.
