Nashville rocker Charlie Bonnet III returns with ‘The Damage Sessions’ album
Southern rock mainstay Charlie Bonnet III has recently released his 25th studio record, the hard hitting ten song collection called The Damage Sessions, and is preparing to hit the road in support.
Having built a large cult following over a three decade career, Bonnet is a working man’s musician and songwriter, bringing grit and honesty to a music world filled with hype and gimmicks. What started as a production project for another artist (cow punk pioneer Pete Berwick), The Damage Sessions marks the first time Charlie has brought in an outside writer for the bulk of material on an album. “Basically I was co-producing what was to be Pete Berwick’s final studio record. He would send me very primitive live acoustic versions of his ideas, and I would create the arrangements and musical structures for everything. I would then take the finished ideas to my studio producer, Dave Summers, and we would build the bed tracks, ” Charlie reflects. “Pete’s record didn’t get much of a push, so we took the basic tracks and added some more guitars, put my voice on the songs, tweaked a few lyrics, and made everything a bit meaner. It was a fun little project.”
The Damage Sessions is a view into the pain and endless grind of the human experience. Songs like “You’ll Get Used To It,” “Finger Down My Throat,” and “The Damage Is Done” straddle the line of heavy metal and punk rock, while the roots rock stylings of “Time Clock On The Wall,” and the eerie “Ghost Tears” showcase the depth of Pete Berwick’s lyrical landscape. “Pete is a very interesting character,” Charlie states. “I met him at my very first factory job when I was about nineteen years old. He was in Nashville trying to make it, and was very jaded and disillusioned by the business. I was a kid releasing heavy metal records at the time, but was a fan of what he was writing even back then. It’s crazy to think that 30 years later we made a record together, like a full circle moment. It’s a fun collaboration with a neat back story. Hopefully the world thinks it’s as cool as I do.”
